To date, this has been my favorite project. This dining room set consists of 12 chairs, the table and will someday have two matching corner hutches to go into the room. The table top and the table stringer are made of AA High Curl Quarter sawn Koa. The truly amazing aspect of this table is that there has been a moratorium on the harvesting of Koa wood for many years in Hawaii. It took quite a bit of research, and after several dead ends, I did find the wood I need for this project from two sources. There was a supplier in Tennessee who had a flitch that would supply the 10 10'5' X 8/4 X 6" that I needed for the table top. I also found another supplier in Hawaii shortly after finding this first supplier who was able to actually cut down a tree and supply me with matching wood from the same flitch as well. It took my supplier approximately 5 months to locate the exact tree needed for this project, and then it had to be felled, milled, dried and then shipped from the Big Island of Hawaii to Minnesota. It truly was the full woodworking experience when it comes to the creation of something of this magnitude. The table top itself is 9.5' long, roughly 45" wide at it's widest point, and a full 1 13/16" thick. All the pieces that comprise the top are book-matched in that each piece could fold over onto the adjacent one to represent the original placement within the flitch (trunk). The base to this table is made of Cocobolo. The chair legs are made of the same Curly Koa, and the back and seats are made of Cocobolo. All pieces are solid and there is no plywood anywhere in this set. The bases of the table are tied together through a pegging system which can be seen in the photographs. I apologize for the quality of the photographs, but sometimes snapshots is all I get until the professional photographer can come in. I will post those photos when I get them.
