When working on a commercial construction project I found these these objects in the back of the building, buried and rusting away. The nearest I can figure giving the nature of the building we were working on is that these were pallets used in the warehouse and date from the 1950's. The originals had either oak or cedar which had now rotted away (see photo). I decided these items were worth salvaging. The first one was to be simply a step for my home but when my Aunt, Gail, saw it she mentioned that it would make a perfect coffee table. She was right and since I have restored several of these pieces, a few of which are shown below. The wood in all of these is cedar with a natural oil stain and Deft as the final finish. The hardware was painted decoratively and either the fastening mechanisms were also painted or stainless steel was used. I currently use three of these in my daily life and find them to be quite practical. I gave one to Gail for her suggestion in the hopes that the grandchildren would provide the patina I thought it deserved !
This was the habitat where I found the following !
The metal on this piece was painted with three different colors: tan, white, and black. The desired effect was a speckled pattern. The metal was then coated with three coats of clear coat to ensure durability. The wood here is cedar.
The metal here was simply painted a flat black with the hardware (bolts) being galvanized metal. The wood here is cedar.
I have about five of these pallets left (in the condition that is shown above in the out of doors). They all need a home. I would estimate the cost of these to be approximately $500 excluding any shipping costs. This price is for cedar only and the price would increase with other hardwoods. I simply chose cedar as I was going for the patina that cedar achieves with age.
