Bookshelves

In this project the client wanted a bookshelf that would have the wall being the back of the cabinet itself. The shelves and uprights were milled out of Vertical Grain (VG) fir stair tread stock (not so easy to find in certain places of the country). All of the uprights received the shelves in dados and as can be seen, these shelves were attached with brass screws and glue. Ultimately the client wanted the detail of the brass screws (to the left in the photo) so we needed to ensure that the proper countersink was used so that the screws were flush with the wood surface. The detail is actually quite nice and I believe the structural attributes of this detail are worth consideration in other applications. The finish here was a brushed water-borne floor finish (Pacific Strong) with fine sanding in between coats. A total of three coats was applied to this piece to minimize finish build-up.

The following two photos are of another project for the same client as above. We used the exact same procedure and products in this project.

In the following project the client wanted a double sided bookcase so that it would be accessible form both sides. The bookcase itself is made of Maple. The shelves are received by the upright in double blind dados and the back that passes through the entire interior is also accepted into the upright by a dado. The top also has double blind dados for which to receive the uprights and the back as well. The finish on this piece is a lacquer based product called Deft. A total of three coats of this product was applied with a focused buffing/sanding in between each coat. The result of this procedure is robust characterization of the wood with a moderate/high degree of durability (this type of finish is not designed to handle beverage containers, i.e.; soda cans, coffee cups). On this note, one should NEVER place beverage containers on furniture unless you have prior knowledge that the finish is capable of handling the conditions that are created.
